If you don’t know me personally, you may not know that I spent 4 of the best years of my life in Waco, TX. It’s where I went to school and met some of the most important people in my life. So as you might imagine, I have been a big fan of the HGTV show, Fixer Upper, which takes place in Waco and stars two Baylor grads.
Since we were going back down to Waco while in Texas for Christmas, I had to stop by Chip and Joanna Gaines’ new Magnolia Silos. Of course, I had seen some of the clips on Fixer Upper of their restoration of the Silos, but seeing it in person blew my expectations out of the water!
In addition to a market, which is probably 5 times the size of their original Magnolia store on Bosque, it also has a small garden and a large lawn area that is surrounded by food trucks. They have really made it a great place to come visit. You can stop by for breakfast or lunch, and do some shopping afterwards.

While I was impressed with the variety and uniqueness of items in the market, I was not as impressed with how clearly mass-produced they were. Some of the items in there are things you could find at World Market or Anthropologie. I noticed this at their last store as well. Very few items seemed exclusive for Magnolia. In addition to that, they are really expensive! I picked up a wood cake stand, turned it over, and couldn’t believe the price tag said $56. I even said out loud, “Holy crap, $56?”, and a women behind me replied, “Oh, good. I’m not the only one.”
With that said, if you are a big Fixer Upper fan and happen to be traveling through the Waco area, I really do recommend stopping by the Silos. The entire property is really cool, and as someone who lived in Waco when it was more known for David Koresh than HGTV, it is amazing how much this show (and a good football team) has transformed this city.
Some of you may even be big enough fans to make a special trip to Waco just to see this place. If you do make the special trip to Waco and are not familiar with this small city in the heart of Texas, here are some other things to do in Waco while you are there:
Take a tour of McLane Stadium and eat at the Baylor Club overlooking the field afterwards.
Have lunch at the Olive Branch then go shopping at Spice.
Visit the Bears (real, live bears) on Baylor’s campus.
Have a Gut Pack at Viteck’s (pronounced Vee-teck) BBQ.
Walk across the suspension bridge in Downtown.
Grab a Big-O at George’s and ask why it’s called a Big-O.
Visit the Dr. Pepper museum right down the road from Magnolia.
Pick up a Cowboy Coffee from the original Common Grounds right next to campus. (Fun fact: Common Grounds, was started by students who came up with the concept during their Freshman year Business class).
